Be sure to stop and have a picnic or stroll by the Mortlock River, located less than 10km south of Goomalling on the Goomalling-Toodyay Rd.
If you’re lucky you might see an echidna here, so keep your eyes peeled and please be careful when driving in this vicinity.
The saline Mortlock River flows into the Avon River just out of Northam, which in turn flows into the Swan River, that meanders through Perth to discharge into the Indian Ocean at Fremantle.
The river was named after surveyor Henry Mortlock Ommanney in the 1830s. Ommanney was the first European to discover the river during an expedition through the area in 1835.
After you visit Mortlock River, check out the granite outcrops, wetlands and gnamma holes at Oak Park Reserve.
